The Journey Makes a Difference

Let’s be honest…It’s not about me.

It’s how WE….

I could write stuff about my professional experience—college degree, work experience, volunteering, Nobel Prizes, etc.—until your eyes glaze over. What’s most important is showing you how my experience gave me the skills and work ethic to be the trusted copywriter you want to use…and keep handy in your contacts list.

All my life, I’ve been motivated by two things: helping others reach potential and being creative.

I started my professional career over 20 years ago as a Recreation Therapist. Had some twists and turns along the way. During the journey, I learned the hard and soft skills that informs my copywriting and how I relate with others.

Let’s put it into some perspective….

Out of college, I worked in a residential setting for adults with severe and profound developmental disabilities for over a decade where I learned:

  • Breaking down concepts into simpler forms

  • Finding unique, effective ways to communicate

  • Empathy, understanding, and compassion

  • How to work with a team to reach common goals

After that I worked with at-risk teens in a mental health treatment facility where I learned:

  • Keeping composure during stressful (sometimes aggressive) times

  • Persuading a sometimes hostile crowd to try new things

  • Adapting and improvising based on the exact needs of who I was working with

  • Staying balanced during (not so) constructive criticism

  • Respecting and appreciating diversity

Managing a large suburban food pantry during the pandemic and a major construction project helped me:

  • Improve leadership and communication skills

  • Adapt to changes and uncertainty

  • See (literally) tons of products and packaging that wasn’t working—there’s a reason some things get donated

  • Gain a clearer understanding of the thought processes and motivations for people choosing certain products

Volunteering in ecological restoration for the forest preserves reinforced:

  • An appreciation of the many details and nuances making up the big picture.

  • The importance to pause, compose, and then return to a project when necessary.

When I got certified to use a chainsaw (for the trees that didn’t belong) I quickly learned:

  • The importance of being totally focused on the task in front of you—which is why I’m typing this with my 10 fingers!

And…Of Course…The Writing

Writing has always been part of my life. I distinctly remember banging away at an Apple IIe computer repurposing Scooby-Doo plots when I was 8 or 9 and then sharing with friends.

And it’s never really stopped.

Around the time I was in college, I picked up Stephen King’s On Writing book. He said try to write at least 1,000 words a day. And I did. Just about everyday. Fiction, drafts of novels, song lyrics, poems, random thoughts…whatever came to mind. The book also said something like the first 2 million words you write are more or less practice reps. Yep…I got those reps in.

And I honed my story telling skills…People love stories. And it make for VERY EFFECTIVE copy.

About 5 years ago, I discovered you can actually make a living writing. Not the starving artist kind of writing, but, well, what we’re talking about today.

It started with a blog. I learned all about formatting, SEO, making valuable content people want to read. Then I started taking on clients for a variety of content and copywriting projects. I wrote articles, blog posts, landing page copy, product reviews, scripts, emails, and…well…you’ve seen some examples in the portfolio. I kept learning, honing my skills, and using what I learned from previous experiences to write better.

I even published a book helping parents and clinicians address mental health issues using engaging activities. Check out my book, Therapy Games for Teens.

With every project, I became more and more convinced copywriting was my perfect fit…being creative while helping individuals/businesses reach their potential.

And this is why I would love to work with you today!
